One of the best ways to guarantee successful crowdfunding results is by being yourself and opening up to your audience about what drives you. Their video is basically a manifesto for why independent musicians should keep at it, even when all odds are against them.

Whether it’s a live or studio recording environment, mixing is there to achieve balance and glue songs together, both on the microscopic level of individual guitar, drum, or vocal tracks, and on the macroscopic level of tying everything together.

As the Enlightenment gathered steam toward the end of Bach’s life, such views seemed to many of his colleagues to be outmoded or even a threat, as the product of the very same ancient, superstitious religion that the Enlightenment sought to escape. (There is an amazing book about Bach’s encounter with Enlightenment attitudes if you wish to learn more about this.)

In this lick, we use a combination of major and minor pentatonic, with the major 6th present as part of the major pentatonic scale, and the Dorian mode. Notice how the lick ends on the minor 3rd, accentuating the relationship between the minor 3rd and major 6th that makes Dorian so unique.

Sorry if you weren’t there, but the late ’90s and early 2000s were fantastic. Once P2P was pioneered via Napster, the floodgates opened and the world of music sharing was here to stay. As an artist and a listener, my personal opinion is that we’ve regressed from that time. And we’re back to the “family.” Mkwaju was an ensemble of Japanese percussionists led by Midori Takada and Yojo Sadanari and features keyboards and production from Joe Hisaishi (popularly known as the composer of the scores to all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films) and Hideki Matsutake, who has also collaborated with the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Obviously, Takada’s signature African marimba rhythms and synthesizer sounds are on full display here.

A delicate balance between music career and everything else important in life needs to be struck by musicians who want to sustain their careers. For example, you might want to spend every waking hour making music, but if doing so isn’t making you money yet, it’s not a realistic option. And this balance doesn’t just involve money. Your close, non-musical relationships have to be prioritized as well and maintained if you want to continue to benefit from having friends and family as a safety net in your life.
