Speaking of research, since artists love to talk about themselves, it’s often quite easy to find out who influenced your favorite singers! A quick search will often turn up a comprehensive list. For example: if you’re particularly into Bob Dylan, you might benefit from reading Ginsberg, Rimbaud, and Kerouac, or listening to Woody Guthrie.

Jeremy is a Montreal-based musician, sound artist and improviser who loves giving advice to emerging artists on how to make their tours more effective. He writes, records and performs electroacoustic “concrète” music for tape, oscillators and amplified objects and surfaces, as well as solo guitar. He has performed and released material throughout Europe and the UK, Asia, the US and Canada, mostly with his trio Sontag Shogun.
Sırma: This was my second Headliners Club session with Lisa and just like last time, it was a very productive and inspiring experience working with her. To me, Lisa is a very refreshing electronic composer, continuously flourishing…. She’s not afraid to try new techniques, she embraces technology, and she’s so open to taking direction while maintaining her musical identity at the same time. But she is new to composing with her voice, and it was really exciting to explore this new territory with her on this track. We kept her vocals in focus, from spoken-word sections to harmony and double layers and pad vocals. She went from “I don’t really sing” to making a track that revolves around her vocals. Isn’t that amazing?! She’s amazing.

Without the internet around to provide an unbroken timeline of artistic events to a potentially endless landscape of wandering eyes, records that couldn’t achieve access to a viable fanbase in the 1980s have mostly, inevitably found themselves buried in the sands of time forever. Many creative masterworks, no matter how well-appreciated at the time of their initial pressing — if mismanaged by independent, boutique labels that couldn’t stay afloat financially — have either approached or gone completely off the cliff edge of existence. But thanks to the interplay between user-submitted content on the web and the way platforms help listeners discover it, some records do actually manage to climb back out of the sand.
Recovery after Maria needs to be viewed in the context of all this, including the island’s position as a colony that’s under full control of the US, often with unsympathetic and oppressive consequences.
